CHAPTER TEN

I had managed to sit through two episodes of Judge Judy and an episode of Shift into Darkness—a new soap opera focused on a family of influential wolf shifters—when Granny called again.

“Rowan’s on her way. She’ll be at the house by around four p.m. It’s quite a ways from Moonshadow Bay,” she added. “She has a couple ideas but she doesn’t want to discuss them till she gets here. Meanwhile, Verity checked in with me and she’s headed over early this afternoon with all the party food and decorations. You’ll have to let her in but under no circumstances are you to lift a finger to help her. I told her that and she promised that she wouldn’t allow you to so much as decorate one cupcake.”

I snorted. “I think decorating cupcakes is beyond my culinary scope, anyway. The best I can do is slap some frosting on them and somehow, I doubt if Verity will stand for something quite so elementary.” It didn’t really matter to me—as long as it tasted good, I didn’t care. On the other hand, it was rather nice to have someone go to special lengths.

“I have customers, so I’d better go. You’re okay for now?”

I could hear the sound of people as they entered the shop. “I’m fine. Go take care of them.”

As I hung up, I looked around for something to do. I hated feeling laid up—I was used to moving around, to taking care of things. But the house was neat, and there wasn’t much to do. Then it occurred to me that tomorrow I’d be seeing the Aseer. Maybe it would be good to meditate. I hadn’t done that in a while and that was one practice I wanted to get back into.

I settled myself on the sofa, where Midnight and Sunshine were sleeping, and while I couldn’t sit cross-legged, I elevated my feet onto an ottoman, drew a light throw across my shoulders, and found a music station that played binaural beats. I found a song for focus and meditation, and took three deep breaths as I let myself sink into that cushion that trance work brings.
